Kathleen Traylor – Song Sense Jewelry

Kathleen Traylor has been making beaded jewelry since 2009, when she came up with the name Song Sense for her shop. She added claywork to her repertoire in August 2016. She loves getting lost through meditation while building organic pieces of art. This process helps her deal with phantom pain and other chronic pain issues.

Kathleen was born with multiple disabilities resulting from a condition known as amniotic band syndrome. Her Shop tagline is “Seven Fingers Zero Toes” since the jewelry she creates with only two fingers on her left hand and she’s also had both of her legs amputated. She hopes the humor of the tagline piques people’s curiosity to visit her site.

Kathleen shares her sense of humor on her blog www.SongSense.org, where she talks about such things as buying new shoes for artificial legs, the birth of her son 31 years ago, and posts announcing sales, new items, and jewelry care advice.

Kathleen has lived in Colorado since 1972. In 1988, she and several friends founded PHAMALY, the first all-disabled theatre group in Colorado, giving actors with disabilities a stage to showcase their capabilities. Kathleen performed with PHAMALY in such roles as Golde, in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, Ms. Pennywise in URINETOWN and Daisy in SIDE SHOW (the last two winning her nominations for Best Actress in a Musical by the Critics Circle).

For 20 years she worked at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Medical School as a Program Assistant in Student Support Services. She enjoyed the opportunity to work with young people on the road to becoming medical professionals, having been a patient all her life. Her services were often called upon to talk with students about the patient experience.

Her passion now is to create jewelry. Song Sense is a collection of claywork and beadwork and Kathleen tries something different each time she approaches the jewelry table. No two pieces are alike, and each piece of art has a sense of Kathleen’s unique spirit.
